Fresh addition to NYC, Tibo (b. 1995) is a self-taught painter from Paris, France. Having started painting in 2023, his works explore dark romantic themes through a dreamlike aesthetic. ”Pomme Grenade” is the first painting in my New York works. A mysterious figure invites you to share a pomegranate, to me a symbol of abundance.
It’s reflecting on my experience of moving here, on a whim and within a month. It’s disorienting and yet full of possibility, so I wanted to capture this fleeting moment -- just before everything becomes clear. You are constantly faced with the choice of whether to trust or not.
And there are always reasons to be wary: even that pomegranate looks explosive. But I think it’s the worst thing you can do when going on an adventure, especially here in New York City. That painting reminds me of that, and of taking the conscious decision to see and focus on the good because that’s how more good happens. And whatever the outcome is, embracing the unknown is always a gift.
